Wood Playset Staining in McKinney, TX

This project involved staining a large wooden playset on a residential property in McKinney, TX. Backyard playsets take a beating — sun exposure, sprinklers, and constant kid traffic wear down the finish faster than almost any other outdoor wood structure, so keeping the wood sealed matters both for appearance and for the safety of the climbing surfaces and grips.

Our crew started with a light hypo wash, a bleach-and-water solution used to clean the wood and knock down any mildew or graying without being as aggressive as a full power wash — an important distinction on a playset with so many tight corners, ropes, and plastic attachments. This step took about 45 minutes. Before staining, we laid down plastic sheeting to protect the surrounding lawn and covered the slide and other non-wood components, then hand-brushed a Redwood stain across the entire structure to get full coverage on every board, post, and railing — prep and hand-brushing together took about 3 hours.

The finished result gives the playset a warm, reddish-brown color and a protective layer against the elements, so the family gets a safer, better-looking play area without needing to replace or refinish it again anytime soon.
